Phosphate-based Solid Electrolytes

Solid Electrolytes for Lithium-ion Batteries

Phosphate Solid Electrolytes (PSEs) are a premier class of materials driving the evolution of next-generation lithium-ion batteries. Known for their robust NASICON-type (Sodium Super Ionic Conductor) crystal structure, these materials provide a stable 3D framework that facilitates rapid lithium-ion transport.

As a key component in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs), NASICON-structured electrolytes offer significant improvements in energy density, thermal safety, and cycle life compared to conventional liquid electrolytes. Two prominent examples are LATP (Lithium Aluminum Titanium Phosphate) and LAGP (Lithium Aluminum Germanium Phosphate), which provide the following strategic benefits:

  • High Ionic Conductivity: Both LATP and LAGP feature the open NASICON framework, which allows for high ionic conductivity—a critical requirement for high-rate battery performance.
  • Enhanced Stability: These materials are chemically stable in ambient air and moisture, simplifying the manufacturing process compared to sulfide-based alternatives. Their structural rigidity also helps suppress dendrite growth.
  • Versatile Compatibility: LATP and LAGP are compatible with a wide range of high-voltage cathode materials, making them versatile building blocks for diverse solid-state battery chemistries.

The potential benefits of PSEs in terms of safety, energy density, and performance make them a promising area of research for the future of lithium-ion batteries.

Available Phosphate Compositions

NEI produces phosphate-based solid electrolyte powders with distinctive features, such as high phase purity and crystallinity, fine particle size, and a high degree of particle size distribution (PSD) uniformity. These powder characteristics allow NEI’s phosphate-based solid electrolyte materials to be produced into suitable structures with excellent electrochemical properties.
