Oxide-based Electrolytes

Solid Electrolytes for Lithium-ion Batteries

Oxide solid electrolytes (OSEs) are a class of materials being explored to replace liquid electrolytes in lithium-ion batteries. Unlike liquid electrolytes, which can be flammable and leak, OSEs are solid materials that can potentially offer improved safety, higher energy density, and faster charging rates. Some benefits and advantages of oxide-based electrolytes include:

  • Enhanced Safety – eliminates the risk of electrolyte leakage & flammability, making batteries safer for various applications.
  • Improved Energy Density – OSEs enable the use of higher-voltage cathode materials, leading to increased energy density.
  • Faster Charging – having higher ionic conductivity than some liquid electrolytes allows for faster charging & discharging rates.
  • Wider Operating Temperature Range – makes them suitable for extreme environments.

Overall, oxide solid electrolytes are a key component in the development of all-solid-state batteries, which could offer even higher energy density and safety advantages compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries.

Available Oxide Compositions

Inorganic oxide-based solid electrolytes are among the most sought-after candidates for an all-solid-state battery. NEI produces a variety of oxide-based solid electrolyte powders (garnet-type, NASICON-type, and perovskite-type), which have distinctive features such as high phase purity and crystallinity, fine particle size, and a high degree of particle size distribution (PSD) uniformity. The afore-mentioned powder characteristics allow NEI’s oxide-based solid electrolyte materials to be produced into suitable structures with excellent electrochemical properties.
