Anti-Ice Coatings

Anti-ice coatings are specialized surface treatments that are designed to prevent the formation of ice on coated surfaces. They work by creating a hydrophobic surface that repels water and inhibits ice adhesion to prevent the buildup of dangerous ice layers. A key benefit of anti-ice coatings is increased safety and efficiency of equipment by reducing ice accumulation to maintain optimal performance in icy conditions. The reduced need for de-icing agents and labor can also lead to significant cost savings.

NANOMYTE® SuperAi

Reduce Ice Adhesion and Prevent Dangerous Ice Buildup

NEI’s anti-ice coatings, NANOMYTE® SuperAi and NANOMYTE® SuperAi-UVP, are designed to impart anti-icing properties to a variety of underlying substrate materials, including plastics, metals, glass, concrete, & ceramics to provide superior properties, such as:

  • Exceptional Ice Protection: Independent testing confirms that SuperAi significantly reduces ice adhesion by up to 80% compared to untreated surfaces.
  • Lasting Durability & Appearance: The nanocomposite coatings are hard and transparent, while providing a smooth and glossy finish with low haze.
  • Simple Application: The lightweight, low viscosity formulation spreads quickly and cures under ambient conditions, with no primer required in most cases.
  • Easy-to-Clean: The lower friction, slippery surface makes it resistant to contamination and easier to clean up.
  • Cost Savings: Suitable for permanent application, thus increasing the service life of coated materials

Selecting the Right Formulation

While our standard NANOMYTE® SuperAi offers excellent weatherability, NANOMYTE® SuperAi-UVP is specifically recommended for plastic or polymeric substrates that are prone to yellowing, chalking, or becoming brittle when exposed to direct sunlight. If your part is made of metal or a UV-stable material, SuperAi is the preferred choice.

Applications & Uses

This breakthrough coating technology mitigates the hazards and inefficiencies associated with ice accumulation, enhancing productivity & safety, and thereby providing a good return on investment. SuperAi is ideally suited for common applications across various industries, including Aerospace (aircraft wings, propellers), Automotive (sensors), Energy (wind turbines, power lines), Infrastructure (bridges, roads, traffic signs), and Marine (ships, boats, offshore structures).

SuperAi Product Sheet »

NANOMYTE® SuperAi can be applied directly on a variety of substrate materials to reduce the ice adhesion of treated surfaces (including plastics, metals, glass, concrete and ceramics) by up to 80%, thereby preventing ice buildup.  SuperAi is an easy to use, single component coating solution. It can be applied by brush, spray, or wipe with no primer or curing required. The dry film thickness can be adjusted to be in the range of 5 – 15 microns and only one coat is required to cover the substrate.

Standard vs UVP:

We recommend our standard SuperAi formulation for inherently stable surfaces like metals, glass, or ceramics. These materials do not degrade or yellow when exposed to sunlight, allowing SuperA to provide full environmental protection without the need for additional additives. The UV-protective version (SuperAi-UVP) is specifically reserved for plastics, resins, and other polymers that are vulnerable to UV damage. While both versions are suitable for outdoor use, the UVP version is only necessary if the underlying material itself requires protection from sun-induced yellowing or brittleness.

Product Specifications:

  • Product Form: One-part liquid coating solution
  • Color: Clear
  • Curing Temperature: 20° – 150 °C
  • Cured Film Thickness: 5 – 15 µm
  • Coverage: 110 m2 (1200 ft2) per gallon

Coating Application
Ensure surfaces to be coated are clean, dry, and in sound condition. Before applying SuperAi, remove all oil, grease, dust, dirt and other foreign material by using an appropriate cleaner. To ensure that the surface is completely free of oil and grease, use a lint-free white cloth with a solvent such as alcohol or acetone, and wipe the surface. If the cloth remains white, the surface is clean; if the cloth turns dark, continue cleaning until it remains white. Once clean, SuperAi can be applied by spraying, rolling, or brushing and is thermally cured under ambient conditions. For complete instructions, please refer to the TDS.

Product Safety Information:

Precautions for Safe Handling
Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used at all times. Provide good ventilation or extraction. Avoid prolonged or repeated breathing of vapor. Avoid contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Keep away from heat, sparks, flames and other sources of ignition. Wash hands thoroughly after handling.

Conditions for Safe Storage
Avoid storage over 100° F and contamination with incompatible materials. Keep containers tightly closed in a cool, well ventilated place. Protect from moisture. Residual vapors might explode on ignition. Do not apply heat, cut, drill, and grind or weld on or near this container.
