Lithium Phosphorous Sulfur Chloride (LPSCl)

Sulfide-based Solid Electrolytes

Lithium Phosphorous Sulfur Chloride (Li6PS5Cl), commonly referred to as LPSCl, is an argyrodite-type superionic solid electrolyte widely used in all-solid-state lithium battery research and development. Its argyrodite crystal structure enables high room-temperature ionic conductivity (10-3 S/cm) along with broad electrochemical stability and favorable compatibility with lithium metal anodes, as well as lower cost compared to germanium-containing compositions.

LPSCl Solid Electrolyte Powder

Produced using NEI’s proprietary manufacturing process, our LPSCl powder delivers high ionic conductivity for solid-state separator layers and composite electrodes. Because sulfide-based materials are highly reactive and moisture-sensitive, LPSCl is synthesized, processed, and packaged under strict inert atmospheric conditions to preserve chemical purity and ion transport performance.

Quick Links

To accommodate different processing needs, NEI offers LPSCl in two grades:

  • Standard Grade: Suitable for standard solid-state cell fabrication and general research applications.
  • Fine Grade: Mechanically processed for applications requiring smaller particle dimensions to improve packing density and dispersion.

NEI also offers custom synthesis to incorporate compositional modifications or substitute dopants into the argyrodite structure.

Note: Due to the highly reactive and air-sensitive nature of sulfide electrolytes, particle size distribution testing is not performed, and custom particle size tailoring is not available for LPSCl or other sulfide-based materials.

Product Safety Information

LPSCl is a flammable solid that requires strict handling precautions due to its extreme reactivity with moisture. When exposed to ambient air or water, LPSCl rapidly hydrolyzes to generate hydrogen sulfide gas (H2S)—a toxic, flammable, and corrosive compound with a characteristic rotten-egg odor. LPSCl must be processed and stored exclusively under a dry inert atmosphere (such as an argon glovebox) while using appropriate personal protective equipment and continuous H2S gas monitoring. In the event of a fire, never use water or foam; only Class D dry powder or inert dry suppressants should be applied.

Precautions for Safe Handling

Handle in a controlled environment, under inert gas. Never allow product to come in contact with moisture or water. Appropriate personal protective equipment should be used at all times. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Provide good ventilation or extraction and avoid breathing vapors.

Conditions for Safe Storage

Store under inert gas in a cool, dry, and well-ventilated place. Keep container tightly sealed and protect from moisture. Never allow product to get in contact with water during storage.

Refer to the Safety Data Sheet for complete information on the safe handling of this material.

Shipping Classification

LPSCl is classified as a Dangerous Goods (Hazmat) shipment due to its water-reactive and toxic properties, requiring regulated UN-certified packaging, proper hazard labeling, and strict compliance with air or ground transport regulations (small quantity exceptions of 30g or less may apply).
